Philly's largest city workers union agrees to 1-year contract, averting strike

Philly's largest municipal workers union has agreed to a one-year contract extension with the City of Philadelphia. The agreement for fiscal year 2025 includes a 5% salary increase, a one-time bonus of $1,400 and other benefits. Union workers were previously without a contract since June 30.

Dog-friendly bar Bark Social, 3720 Main St. in Manayunk, closed permanently on Thursday and declared bankruptcy. Along with the Philly location, the company also closed its other bars in Baltimore and suburban Maryland and Washington, D.C.

Jason Kelce will shoot a late-night talk show in Philly for ESPN starting in January

Former Eagles player Jason Kelce will host a late-night talk show filmed in Philadelphia starting Jan. 3. 'They Call It Late Night' will have five episodes airing on ESPN during the NFL postseason and feature NFL players, coaches and celebrities. Philly band Snacktime will provide music for the show, and Mount Laurel-based production company NFL Films will be involved.

Japanese Breakfast to perform at Coachella in April after expected release of new album

Japanese Breakfast, which formed in Philly in 2013, will be featured at the next Coachella music festival, performing on April 12 and 19. The band will be one of the many acts before the festival's Saturday headliner Green Day. The concerts will be after the expected release of the group's fourth album, which frontwoman Michelle Zauner told GQ Korea should come out in March.

Celebrity lookalike contests are all the rage, and Philly is joining the party

Philly is joining the trend of celebrity lookalike contests with doppleganger competitions for Miles Teller, Jason Kelce and Jalen Hurts. The first – for Teller lookalikes – happens Sunday afternoon at Rittenhouse Square. The Kelce and Hurts contests are set for Dec. 14 and Dec. 15, respectively.

Philadelphia-based drag performer Pi was eliminated from the competition show 'The Boulet Brothers' Dragula' in the season's eighth episode. Pi ultimately landed in fifth place out of 12 contestants.

SEPTA, transit workers unions to continue contract talks amid potential work stoppage

SEPTA is continuing to negotiate with its transit workers unions, who are working without contracts. SMART Local 1594 and Local 234 have each authorized strikes, but the transit authority says no work stoppage is imminent. Both unions are seeking increased pay and better safety precautions.

Weckerly's Ice Cream looking to expand to Rittenhouse Square

Weckerly's is in the early stages of opening a new location in the Rittenhouse Square neighborhood of Center City. It will be the ice cream shop's third location after its original in Fishtown and recent expansion to the King of Prussia Mall. The shop, best known for its unique flavors of ice cream sandwiches, was originally going to close at the end of 2023 before new ownership reopened it in January.

VinylCon returns to Philly to unite analog music and record lovers

VinylCon! will have its second Philly show from Nov. 23-24 after a successful debut in April. The convention will be at 23rd Street Armory in Center City. Over 70 vendors will bring at least 100,000 vinyl records to the show, allowing visitors to grow their own analog music collections.

Temple University resolves class-action lawsuit stemming from COVID-19 closures

Temple University has settled a class-action lawsuit brought on by two cases seeking tuition refunds after its campus shut down and switched to virtual learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The university will put $6.9 million into a settlement fund for students who attended the school in the spring 2020 semester.
