Sixers assign Richaun Holmes to D-League

Richaun Holmes’ last game action came on December 14th against the Toronto Raptors, as the Sixers’ frontcourt logjam and then a concussion suffered in practice have kept him out of the rotation for the past few weeks.

Finally, on Wednesday afternoon, the Sixers announced that Holmes passed all elements of the league’s concussion protocol. And potentially in an effort to give the 23-year-old big man some badly needed playing time, he has been assigned to the D-League and the Delaware 87ers. Holmes should be in uniform for tonight’s Sevens game against the Maine Red Claws.

We wrote earlier today about the Sixers’ crowded frontcourt, and even if Brett Brown can’t find an odd-man out among Jahlil Okafor and Nerlens Noel, there seems to be no spot for Holmes despite the fact he has shown some positive things when given playing time. He might be a bit overqualified for the D-League, but with the big man situation as sticky as it is, at least Holmes will be able to get on the court.

In 21 games this season, Holmes is averaging 16 minutes, 6.9 points on 51.3 percent shooting, and 4.3 rebounds.

Holmes joins Noel, Jerryd Bayless, and Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot as Sixers that have been assigned to Delaware at some point this season.
