The bitter cold will last through Monday night but relief is in sight.
Unfortunately, warmer temperatures will be accompanied by more rain.
A low of 18 degrees is expected overnight Tuesday before the mercury shoots up to near 40, double the recent high temperatures in much of the Philadelphia region. It stays about that warm on Tuesday night and then the mercury climbs higher on Wednesday, with an expected high near 50, according to the National Weather Service forecast.
There may be some light precipitation – probably light snow as the cold lingers – on Tuesday morning in parts of eastern Pennsylvania and northern New Jersey. But accumulation should be minimal, forecasters said. Following will be a transition to rain in the Philadelphia region, but some freezing rain is expected in the far northern suburbs of the city, parts of Berks County, the Lehigh Valley, the Poconos and northern New Jersey. A bit of ice might cover roads in those areas.
Rain is expected to arrive after 10 p.m. Tuesday, and will be a possibility just about every day through the upcoming weekend.
Temperatures could reach a balmy 60 degrees in Philadelphia and points south on Thursday and Friday, according to forecasters.
There is a very low probability of any complaints about that temperature spike.
