Coworking space Pipeline Philly will host a free panel discussion Jan. 26 about the "Golden Era" of hip-hop culture. The conversation will be between hip-hop artist and local legend Schoolly D, Pipeline's Tayyib Smith and Brian Coleman, author of "Check the Technique Volume 2: More Liner Notes for Hip-hop Junkies."

They will discuss how important it is to document the history of hip-hop culture and what current fans can do to celebrate the mid-1980s to mid-1990s "Golden Era."

Philadelphia's own Schoolly D rose to fame in the late 1980s. His 1986 album "Saturday Night - The Album" became controversial for its violent lyrics and earned him the moniker "The Godfather of Gangster Rap."

Coleman's "Check the Technique Volume 2" includes over 80 interviews with artists like Ice Cube, Talib Kweli and Mos Def and goes behind the scenes of the hip-hop movement. He wrote the original volume of "Check the Technique" in 2007. Both books will be available for purchase at this event.
