The Roots look to expand annual Philadelphia festival

Recent success spurs best year for event's ticket sales

Things are going pretty well for The Roots.

Not only are they the house band for "The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon," but the Philadelphia based group is also prepping for their 8th annual Roots Picnic, which has gotten bigger and bigger every year.

That concert at Festival Pier, featuring a number of prominent artists including A$AP Rocky and The Weeknd, has grown tremendously since its inception. According to The Huffington Post, this year's festival has been the event's best for ticket sales, making the group think about expanding the event:

“This year is our best year for ticket sales thus far, and this is going to be the largest that we’ve ever been in the past 8 years as far as expansion. But I feel like pretty soon, we may be growing out of the festival here in Philadelphia. Because we’re close to capacity now," said The Roots frontman Tariq "Black Thought" Trotter.

Trotter added that they were considering locations including New York and Washington D.C. for expansion. Band manager Shawn Gee told The Huffington Post that their fixture on late night television as well as brand awareness about the concert have helped its success.

The Roots Picnic is taking place May 30. Tickets aren't currently available on the event's website, however you can snag one on StubHub (if you're willing to pay $173 or more). Last year's festival included artists such as Snoop Dogg, Biz Markie, and The War on Drugs.
