Police opened fire on a man wielding a knife in New Jersey on Saturday after he reportedly stabbed a female officer nearby Dunkin Donuts in East Orange, officials said.
According to NBC 10, police responded to a call about a man armed with a knife near Dunkin Donuts. They instructed him to drop the weapon, but he refused to do so and walked off down Central Avenue.
After pursuing the suspect by car and on foot, the officers again asked that he surrender his weapon, but he refused to do so. One officer then pepper sprayed the suspect, prompting him to charge at police and stab a female officer in the shoulder.
Around 9 a.m., the stabbed officer and another officer fired at the suspect six times. Both the wounded officer and the suspect were transported to area hospitals, according to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.
The injured officer was treated at the hospital and later released, while the suspect was listed in critical condition. An investigation remains in progress.
