Philly Italian restaurants pitch in to help Italy's earthquake survivors

Two South Philly Italian restaurants are among several around the country running campaigns to help provide relief for those affected by the 6.2-magnitude earthquake that hit central Italy on Wednesday.

Le Virtù, at 1927 E. Passyunk Ave., and Brigantessa, at 1520 E. Passyunk Ave., have joined other restaurants throughout the U.S., and more than 600 in Italy, in an effort to raise funds for the Italian Red Cross, according to Food & Wine.

Each of these restaurants has added an Amatriciana-style dish to its menu in honor of Amatrice, one of the towns most severely impacted by the earthquake.

From Friday to the holidays, Le Virtù will be donating $3 for every sale of its Pasta all’ Amatriciana and Spaghetti alla Gricia. Brigantessa, meanwhile, added Amatriciana pizza to its menu and will also be donating $3 for every sale of that menu item.

Le Virtù also has a fundraiser scheduled for Sept. 22 and will offer diners a four-course dinner for $125 per person. A representative for the restaurant told Food & Wine the dinner will feature dishes from Amatrice, Norcia, Castelluccio and southwestern Marche, all areas damaged during the earthquake.

Cookbook author Domenica Marchetti will be selling books at the dinner as well, with all profits from that night going toward earthquake relief.
