Philadelphia City Council members voted Thursday in favor of a bill that would require employers offer paid sick leave.
Mayor Michael Nutter quickly signed the bill into law — despite having vetoed paid sick leave legislation in 2011 and 2013.
The bill, which passed 14-2, requires that businesses with 10 or more employees offer one hour of paid sick leave for every 40 hours worked — which adds up to about five days per year, philly.com reported.
The law will go into effect after 90 days.
Upon its approval, supporters of the bill in the council chamber chanted: "This is what democracy looks like," philly.com reported.
Republican Councilmen David Oh and Brian J. O’Neill were the two who voted against the bill.
President Barack Obama highlighted paid sick days in his State of the Union address on Jan. 20.
