While parents often inevitability take on the role of advocates for their children, when it comes to the law, it can be daunting.
This is where law students at the University of Pennsylvania, Temple and Drexel universities
are stepping in, offering pro-bono support for local students and their families who are facing disciplinary action through the Philadelphia School District.
“Families just want someone to stand next to them and say ‘here’s what’s going to happen’ so they feel supported,” said Penn Law student and SDAS Lead Advocate Dorian Simmons.
Villanova University has also shown interest in the program, according to The Daily Pennsylvanian. The School Discipline Advocacy Service program began five years ago at Temple, where it was called Students for Students.
Through the program, the law school students’ job is to ensure that families know their rights involving potential school expulsions, suspensions or transfers.
“Families just want someone to stand next to them and say ‘here’s what’s going to happen’ so they feel supported,” said Penn Law student and SDAS Lead Advocate Dorian Simmons.
The law students also benefit by gaining real-world experience and fulfilling requirements for pro-bono legal aid.
