On an unseasonably warm Tuesday in December, a trio of PETA supporters went nearly nude near the entrance to the Christmas Village outside Philadelphia’s City Hall.
The trio – two women and one man – were bodypainted to look “bruised, beaten and bloodied.”
Though they remained silent for the hour they stood facing Market Street where it hits 15th, a duo of handlers let their message be known: They look like “gentle sheep” that get abused to help holiday shoppers give the gift of wool sweaters, scarves and other garments.
That PETA does nearly nude protests like this isn’t all that unusual. It happens all the time. But every time that it happens, it draws the eye of passersby. It did just that on Tuesday.
While PhillyVoice photographer Thom Carroll handled the visual chronicling of the protest itself, I decided to turn an eye on the observers themselves.
