Hulu has released the first trailer for season 3 of “The Handmaid’s Tale," teasing the 30-second trailer scheduled to air during the Super Bowl this Sunday.
In this short, 10-second clip, we see Offred/June (Elisabeth Moss) making her way through the street in Gilead attire, fancying herself as a Martha, and no longer donning the red handmaid uniform we had grown accustomed to seeing her in during seasons 1 and 2. As June blends in with the crowd of Marthas, she frantically looks behind her, almost out of paranoia. Marthas are servants who work in Gilead's highest houses and are considered to be lower ranking than handmaids.
(Spoilers ahead) When season two left off, we saw June with the opportunity to leave Gilead but instead she decided to stay to find her oldest daughter, Hannah. She said goodbye to her newborn as her baby, Nicole, left with Emily (Alexis Bendel) to escape to Canada.
Showrunner Bruce Miller told The Hollywood Reporter that June will still have her fair share of ups and downs, but what changes in season 3 is her demeanor, "There's kind of a level of rebellious spirit in June that will make her more hard-charging, and the victories will be a little bit more visceral."
A release date for season 3 hasn’t been announced yet, but we can infer the premiere date may be in just a few months, given that the first and second seasons premiered in April 2017 and May 2018 respectively.
Margaret Atwood, the novelist who wrote "The Handmaid's Tale," will be releasing a sequel called "The Testaments." Atwood released the cover for the new sequel on Thursday. The book will be published by Penguin Random House and released on Sept. 10 of this year.
