Deborah Paredes is the charming senior membership advisor of the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce. A native of Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk in England, Paredes has lived in Philadelphia since 1984 and has worked at the Chamber of Commerce since 2003, where she consults with local businesses on the benefits of partnering with the organization. When Deborah isn't meeting with entrepreneurs, she's tearing it up on the dance floor or volunteering with Big Brothers/Big Sisters. Learn more about Deborah below:
What is the last book you read?
"The Curious Incident of the Dog in The Night-Time" by Mark Haddon. This Christmas I visited my family in England and saw the play in London with my Mum. I thought it would be helpful to read the book beforehand.
What is the best meal you’ve eaten in the last month?
It was actually one I cooked myself. I found Iranian dried limes at International Foods & Spices, 4203 Walnut St., and made “Iranian Vegetable Stew” from Yotam Ottolenghi’s cookbook “Plenty More.” The limes added depth and an umami boost to the fantastic stew; well worth the effort!
Who is your favorite Philadelphian right now?
“Philly Jesus” Michael Grant. On Walnut Street the other day I watched him helping a homeless woman holding up a sad sign asking for help. While most of us rushed past that woman and tried to avoid eye contact, he knelt down beside her and offered her advice and help.
What is the most impactful advice you’ve ever received?
Some simple advice I stumbled across recently on Pinterest: “Don’t go broke trying to look rich.”
What are you most looking forward to doing this weekend?
Friday eve, I’ll be at a salsa dance social my teacher Mike Andino is hosting. On Saturday I’m a Big Sister with Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Burlington, Camden & Gloucester counties. I’m taking my little sister to The Fire & Ice Festival in Mount Holly.
