Kylie Jenner has been dethroned and a simple brown egg is now the reigning king of Instagram.
Earlier this month, a user under the Instagram account @world_record_egg posted image of a brown egg with a white background that looked like a generic stock photo as its first and only post. The photo, dated Jan. 4, has since amassed a record 29.3 million likes – more likes than any other post in Instagram's eight-year history.
How did this photo rise to such stardom? It was all in the spirit of taking the "most liked" title away from the likes of Kylie Jenner and other popular Instagram celebrities.
Prior to the egg, Jenner had the most liked photo with the birth announcement of her daughter last year. The post has received more than 18 million likes.
The person behind the egg account, reportedly from London, told 6ABC they were inspired to start the account after persevering through a dry January attempt.
"While doing dry January, I was sitting at home reading an article online about the top 20 Instagram posts of 2018," the account holder told 6 ABC in an email.
"I thought it would be an interesting experiment to try and beat the record with something as basic as possible."
The egg photo officially got more likes than Jenner's birth announcement on Sunday evening, prompting the reality star to reference it on her on Instagram feed. Since then the egg photo has gotten more than 10 million new likes.
