Eddie Murphy made his return to Studio 8h for the first time in over 30 years for "Saturday Night Live's" 40th anniversary special, but his unexpectedly short appearance left many fans disappointed and confused.
Fellow comedian Chris Rock gave a heartfelt introduction about Murphy, who then came out and thanked the crowd, referencing that the moment felt like he was at a college reunion. But that was pretty much it. No jokes. No impressions.
Murphy was, however, supposed to have a role in the show, which he turned down, according to Norm Macdonald’s Twitter feed.
Macdonald said Murphy was the first choice to play Bill Cosby in the"Celebrity Jeopardy" sketch's “Potent Potables” punchline. Apparently Macdonald and co-writers Steve Higgins and Lori Jo Hoekstra all attempted to get Murphy on board for the part.
So, the talks were underway. "Brett says Eddie doesn't feel comfortable", "Eddie says 'maybe it's ok since he's doing pre-allegation Cosby"

We talk in his dressing room a good hour. When it's over, I'm convinced he'll do it.

In the end, Murphy decided against the role.
Eddie decides the laughs are not worth it. He will not kick a man when he is down.

Eddie Murphy, I realize, is not like the rest of us. Eddie does not need the laughs.

According to NBC News, Bill Cosby has released the following statement in regard to Murphy's decision not to play him: "I am very appreciative of Eddie and I applaud his actions."
Current SNL cast member Kenan Thompson took his place in the sketch. Watch it below.
