Eagles release Cary Williams

The Eagles announced a no-brainer decision today -- They released Cary Williams, and rid themselves of his cap-eating contract. A few weeks ago, we identified Williams as an extremely likely cap casualty. Here's what we said:

Cary Williams, CB: $8,166,668 cap figure in 2015, savings of $6.5 million if cut.
Williams has the fourth highest 2015 cap number on the team. Repeat: Cary Williams has the fourth highest 2015 cap number on the team. So... Cary Williams can stay and start for the Eagles, or they can use the $6.5 million they'll save to sign a much better player who doesn't bitch:

Cary Williams

The Eagles' needs in their defensive secondary are obvious, as they've ranked 32nd and 31st against the pass the last two seasons, and gave up the third most plays of 20+ yards in NFL history in 2014. They are likely to be active players in free agency, with the most likely target at cornerback being Byron Maxwell of the Seahawks.

Williams' commentary on sconces will be missed. His play on the field likely will not.
