Philly Photo Day began in 2010 as a way to mark Philadelphia Photo Arts Center's first birthday. Its mission was to bring the city together by having citizens document one day in its life through photography. It received just over 300 photo submission its first year, but for its 2014 event PPAC received 1,900 photos.
For 2015, they're expanding their reach further. The Oct. 9 event has been renamed Greater Philly Photo Day and they are soliciting submissions from the 11 surrounding counties of the Greater Philadelphia region: New Castle County in Delaware; Burlington, Camden, Gloucester, Mercer, and Salem Counties in New Jersey; and Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Philadelphia counties in Pennsylvania.
Photographers of all experience levels using all devices are encouraged to snap a picture on Friday, Oct. 9 and submit their shots to the PPAC website by Wednesday, Oct. 14. From there, each photo (yes, every one) will be included in a giant exhibit at PPAC opening Thursday, November 12. As a bonus, three of those submissions will be selected for display on SEPTA platform posters all over the region.
Sure, professional photographers will be getting in on the action, but Greater Philly Photo Day is open to everyone. Want to take a selfie at Love Park? Send it in. Snapped a pic of a cute cat hanging out in a South Philly window? Send it in. Staging a mini photoshoot to get your view of the sunset just right? Send it in. As long as it's taken on Oct. 9 and submitted on time, you're good to go.
In addition to hosting this fun activity for the whole city, PPAC will be hosting 20 free three-hour, hands-on photography workshops throughout the region. See the full list of locations here and get ready to snap away.
