A state trooper's duties went beyond normal police work Friday when he helped a mother deliver her child, authorities say.
New Jersey State Police say an expecting couple from Lakewood were on their way to a hospital in New Brunsick when their baby could not wait any longer.
The husband pulled off on the northbound lanes of the Garden State Parkway and called 911.
Sergeant Boag, who was off-duty, heard the dispatcher's transmission and responded.
He arrived at the scene around 4 p.m. at milepost 110 and helped deliver a healthy baby girl, police say.
The mother and infant were then transported to Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank where authorities say they are doing well.
