A 26-year-old woman who was shot in the head and found behind a school in North Philadelphia late on Friday night is in critical condition, according to officials.
The shooting occurred Friday night on the 2400 block of North 7th Street near the Hartranft Elementary School, 6 ABC reports. Witnesses said that as they were walking nearby the school, they found the victim bleeding in a rear alleyway with small handgun near her head.
The two witnesses told authorities that they ran from the scene and then contacted police. They then returned to the scene to find the victim attended by an unknown male, believed to be someone from the neighborhood, but the gun was no longer there.
The woman, who has not been identified, was rushed to Temple University Hospital to undergo surgery and is now listed in critical condition.
An investigation is underway as police seek to determine a motive and identify a suspect in the shooting.
