University City District’s West Philadelphia Skills Initiative (WPSI) has launched a professional development program to train Philadelphia residents for quality-wage, union careers with SEPTA.
SEPTA will offer opportunities for graduates of the training program to interview for bus operator positions. Applications are being accepted for the training program through Friday, June 10th, with the program running July 5th through August 11th. Interested applicants can visit philadelphiaskills.org/jobs to learn more about the program, training program dates, and to submit an application.
WPSI is hosting virtual information sessions on Friday, June 3rd and Wednesday, June 8th to provide an overview of the program, recruitment process, and expectations for the program. Registration is open for June 3rd and June 8th.
The Bus Operator Program was custom-designed for SEPTA and includes no-cost CDL training and testing. The program is a blend of virtual training on Zoom (so high-speed internet and a working webcam are essential,) with CDL training and testing done in person. Participants earn a $150 weekly stipend while enrolled in the program.
If hired by SEPTA, the starting wage for Bus Operators is $18.58 per hour. Bus Operator roles are guaranteed full-time, benefited positions upon hire.
Who should apply?
The program seeks applicants with customer service experience, a high school diploma or GED, a valid PA driver’s license with a clean driving record for at least the last three years, proof of COVID vaccination, and complete schedule flexibility if hired by SEPTA. Applications are due by Friday, June 10th 2022 at 5 p.m.
