Temple lost to Toledo 32-17 in the Boca Raton Bowl on Tuesday night, but a questionable late call might have prevented the Owls from tying the game up.
Down eight points with 2:50 left, Temple kicker Tyler Mayes executed the ol’ “dribbler up the middle” onside kick to perfection. It appeared as if Mayes recovered the ball and that the Owls would have a chance to tie the game:
Not so fast. Unfortunately for Temple, a Toledo player escaped the pile with the football and the refs awarded the Rockets with the ball. Toledo would score on the ensuing possession to put the game away.
Matt Rhule was disappointed with the Owls’ performance, but it was clear that he also felt his player recovered the onside kick:
