A bridge closed for months in Northwest Philadelphia is set to reopen.
The Walnut Lane Bridge over the Wissahickon Creek closed in April so crews could replace a deteriorated concrete deck and sidewalks.
The bridge will reopen to drivers and pedestrians on Tuesday, Sept. 27, now that the work is complete, a PennDOT spokesperson told Chestnut Hill Local.
Officials said the work is part of a $14.7 million project, funded entirely by federal grants, to restore the historic bridge, which was built in 1907 and for a time was the longest concrete bridge in the world. The bridge is 565 feet long and 60 feet wide and, according to PennDOT, nearly 17,000 vehicles traverse the bridge daily.
Other improvements include a reconstruction of the roundabout on the Mount Airy side of the bridge to improve safety conditions.
The construction work began in November.
