Uber riders will soon have the ability to tip their drivers, a request the ride sharing company is making to satisfy the demands of its drivers, along with a series of changes announced Thursday.
All U.S. drivers will be able to receive tips by July 31. To start, tipping is available in Seattle, Minneapolis and Houston.
Riders and UberEATS customers will have the option to add a tip from the app after rating the driver. Uber will not take any portion of the tip, and passengers will not be required to leave a tip.
Among other changes, riders will be charged a cancellation fee for cancelling rides more than two minutes after booking at ride. They previously had five minutes to do so before being assessed a fee.
Drivers also will earn a per-minute rate if they wait more than two minutes for a rider to arrive.
Uber sent an email to its drivers Thursday detailing its commitment to improving the driving experience.
"This is just the beginning," the email read. "Over the next 180 days we are committed to making driving with Uber better than ever. Look out for the next round of improvements in July. WE know there's a long road ahead, but we won't stop until we get there."
