There were two fatal shootings in West Philadelphia this past Memorial Day weekend, according to authorities.
Both slayings occurred during early morning hours.
Around 2:22 a.m. on Saturday, May 28, 12th District officers responded to a report of a person with a gun on the 2000 block of South 66th Street.
There, police said they found Vance Turner, 26, of the 1900 block of South Salford Street, with gunshot wounds to his legs and torso. He was taken to Penn-Presbyterian Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Police said a preliminary investigation revealed that Turner was allegedly selling narcotics when two unknown males came around the corner and fired at him.
At about 5:15 a.m. the next day, police said officers responded to a reported shooting at 52nd Street and Woodland Avenue, where they discovered George Turner, 39, of Upper Darby, in the passenger seat of a Chevy with a gunshot wound to his head.
Turner was pronounced dead by a medic about 10 minutes later, police said.
Investigations into both killings are still ongoing.
Including both weekend shootings, there have been 105 homicide victims this year, a 9 percent jump from 2015, according to crime statistics from the Philadelphia Police Department.
