Twitter reacted quickly Thursday to news that President Donald Trump will declare a national emergency to build his signature campaign promise – a wall at the southern border.
The U.S. Senate passed, 83-16, a bipartisan spending measure on Thursday that will avoid another government shutdown, and a U.S. House vote is scheduled for Thursday night.
According to Politico:
italic The Senate took action after Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced that President Donald Trump would sign the bill and also declare a national emergency to fund his border wall.
If Trump takes action as reported, Democrats would immediately challenge the national emergency declaration in the courts.
While Trump has yet to tweet Thursday on declaring an emergency, plenty of conservative and liberals weighed in on the imminent move.
Trump's base lauded the move, blaming Democrats for their intractability on the immigration issue.
But plenty of others opined that a declaration of national emergency for the border wall was fascism, unconstitutional and un-American.
Democrats’ refusal to negotiate has rendered Congress inept at doing its job to protect Americans. At this point POTUS is absolutely right to use constitutional executive action authority to build the wall and secure our border. This is a national emergency. I fully support him.

“When it comes to matters of national security, courts are often reluctant to step in and second guess a president, leaving it to the other two branches of government to battle it out and reach a political resolution. However...”

Sean Hannity: Trump keeps his promises. I predict he'll find a way to get the money to build the wallhttps://t.co/Vhzo3enSkE

We knew #EmergencyDeclaration was #Trump's intent as soon as shadow chief of staff Sean Hannity "predicted" it would happen.

Sean Hannity and Lou Dobbs are running the country.
lol what a joke.
As much as border security updates is an absolute necessity, the thought of using a declaration of emergency concerns me a great deal. What will prevent a future president from using the same argument on partisan disagreements? #emergencydeclaration

Donald Trump’s purported determination to declare a “national emergency”to build his wall is a giant step away from democracy and a giant step toward dictatorship. He means to destroy an American form of government that has survived for 200+years.

Declaring a national emergency would be a lawless act, a gross abuse of the power of the presidency and a desperate attempt to distract from the fact that @realDonaldTrump broke his core promise to have Mexico pay for his wall.
— Nancy Pelosi (@SpeakerPelosi) February 14, 2019
Declaring a national emergency over this President's vanity project is ridiculous. We don't need a wall. Instead, we should address the actual emergencies facing our country — everything from gun violence to the opioid crisis.
— Kamala Harris (@KamalaHarris) February 14, 2019
There is not a "national emergency" with regard to the southern border. What President Trump is doing is unlawful and must be opposed vigorously in the courts and legislatively.
— Bernie Sanders (@SenSanders) February 14, 2019
President Trump’s national emergency declaration is a complete abuse of power. No President can be allowed to spend taxpayer dollars without authorization from Congress.

If Trump's emergency declaration to build a border wall is legitimized by the courts, then get ready for a future Dem Pres enacting Medicare for All and gun control via emergency declaration if he/she can't get it through Congressional action. #BorderWall #Emergencydeclaration

The emergency declaration is a cop out. The courts will rule against Trump and he will claim to his supporters that he tried to get wall. The country will become more divided and Republicans will trust the courts even less.#emergencydeclaration #BorderSecurity

Declaring a fake national emergency when you cannot pass a law democratically is FASCISM.

This is an unconstitutional, illegal power grab and it must be stopped.
