On the first day of the new year PhilaMOCA, an all-purpose art gallery and community space, will hold The Philly Pigeon Poetry Slam at 8:30 p.m. A poetry slam is a competition between poets performing original work, judged by members of the audience.

This event will feature only women poets in the line-up since the winner will get to represent The Philly Pigeon at Women of the World 2016 in Brooklyn, New York. Those who wish to compete that night should arrive by 8:30 to place their names into the drawing.

There will also be special New Year's touches like champagne, a disco ball and prizes for Best Dressed. The featured poet is Melissa Lozada-Oliva, a spoken word poet who was a National Poetry Slam Champion in 2015.

The event is $10 to attend or perform. Those that would like to reserve seating can for $20.
