State of emergency in Whitehall Township, thousands without power in Lehigh Valley

Downed trees crash into a pool at a residence in North Whitehall Township following a severe storm Tuesday afternoon.

Whitehall Township in the Lehigh Valley has declared a state of emergency following a storm Tuesday afternoon.

Officials are warning residents to avoid unnecessary travel and downed power lines until crews can fix them. 

Energy provider PPL is reporting more than 8,000 power outages across the region, with more than 6,000 concentrated in Lehigh and Northampton counties.

A tornado warning had been issued earlier in the day. According to 6 ABC, several viewers sent in photos of funnel clouds in the area, however the National Weather Service has not confirmed a tornado. 

Residents also reported seeing large hail falling in Chester, Northampton and Lehigh counties, according to NBC Philadelphia. 

Flooding has also been occurring in the region since the storm passed through, with winds as high as 61 m.p.h. hitting the region, according to The Morning Call. 

A severe thunderstorm reason for the Delaware Valley expired at 8 p.m. after scattered storms popped up around the region.
