Temple University announced it will lead a $20 million, two-year project with the U.S. Army Research Lab focused on the research and design of new materials to prevent brain injury.

Researchers from several departments within the university, including in the fields of science, neuroscience, engineering, technology and design, will come together as part of the agreement

A representative from the university's athletics department will also be involved, as will researchers from the University of Southern California, University of Southern Mississippi and the University of North Texas, under the guidance of Temple.

Their goal over the next two years is to understand and improve the performance of materials used to prevent brain injury and to create new materials based on their findings.

While the primary focus is on reducing ballistics impacts for soldiers, Temple notes the results can also translate into broader uses, such as providing improved protection for athletes.
