A 17-year-old Camden girl is charged with shooting to death a 13-year-old city boy named Nathaniel Plummer Jr.
The boy was found near Beacon and Line streets after a shot detection system and 911 calls alerted officers at about 11:15 p.m. on Jan. 7.
Taken to Cooper University Hospital, he was pronounced dead an hour later. He is Camden's first and only homicide in 2016.
The suspect, not identified by authorities due to her age, has been held at a juvenile detention facility since Jan. 9.
She had surrendered then to Camden County police in connection with an October 2015 shooting.
In that incident, police responded at 1:16 p.m. on Oct. 30 to the 2600 block of Mickle Street in reference to a ShotSpotter activation. Officers found the shooting victim, a 19-year-old man from Camden, in the area of 27th and Stevens streets.
He was taken to Cooper University Hospital and treated.
Ballistic evidence links the suspect to both shootings, according to the Camden County Prosecutor's Office.
The suspect is charged in the October case with attempted murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, unlawful possession of a weapon and aggravated assault.
The two shooting incidents happened about half a mile apart.
The boy, who went to the Octavius Catto Community School in East Camden, was walking to his grandmother’s house at the time of the shooting, according to his mother, Taisha Mercado.
