A New Jersey-based communications company identified as "the largest female-owned marketing and communications firm in the country" abruptly shut down Wednesday after 30 years in business.
Star Group Communications, which had offices in New Jersey, Philadelphia, and Las Vegas, notified 150-plus employees of its closing in a statement displayed on the company's homepage.
(Star Group Communications/www.stargroup1.com)"Effective close of business today, it is with deepest regret that we must advise you that due to circumstances beyond our control, Star Group Communications, Inc. will cease to operate," read another memo sent to employees, according to Philadelphia Business Journal.
What caused the company to shut down remains unclear, though according to Adweek, one clue may be found in the agency's client list, which includes Comcast, the Wharton School of Business at UPenn, Fox Rothschild and Tropicana Entertainment.
It's possible that the failed Comcast/Time Warner Cable merger, which led to a series of layoffs at San Francisco- and New York-based GS&P, may have had a damaging impact on the company's prospects, though the size of Star's Comcast account was not known.
