1 person dead, 3 injured in shootings in Southwest Philly

A 34-year-old woman was killed and a 29-year-old man was shot in the face on Wheeler Street, police say. An hour later, gunfire erupted several blocks away.

A pair of shootings in Southwest Philly on Tuesday left a 34-year-old woman dead and three other people injured, police say.

Three people were shot and 34-year-old woman was killed in a pair of shootings in Southwest Philadelphia late Tuesday afternoon, police said. 

The first shooting occurred on the 7000 block of Wheeler Street, near Elmwood Avenue, at 4:17 p.m. The 34-year-old woman had been shot in her stomach and wrist, and a 29-year-old man had been shot in the face, police said.

They each were transferred to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where the woman was pronounced dead at 4:51 p.m. As of Tuesday night, the man was in critical condition, according to 6ABC.

The second shooting happened about an hour later on the 2600 block of 72nd Street, near Elmwood Park, when a man got out of his vehicle and began shooting in the direction of a pizza shop, police said. A 24-year-old man who was in front of the restaurant was shot in his right calf. 

A 41-year-old man later arrived at the police station, saying he was injured in the shooting. 

"That person stated they were driving on Passyunk Avenue when they were struck by something," Inspector Michael Gormley, told 6ABC. "They believe it could be a fragmentation from the window or a bullet fragmentation."

Both men were taken Penn Presbyterian Medical Center for treatment to non-life-threatening injuries. 

The shooting occurred mere blocks from the scene of the first shooting. Police have not said whether they believe they are related. Investigators have not recovered any weapons, and no arrests have been made.
