A South Jersey retailer accused of being an outlet for the sale of puppy mill dogs is closing permanently.
The Puppy Barn on Route 206 in Burlington County informed county officials this week of their plans after a health inspection turned up contagious and sometimes deadly parvovirus.
The facility, in Springfield Township, had been temporarily closed due to an ongoing SPCA investigation. An online petition aimed at closing the store has about 6,000 signatures. It was begun by a man who has claimed the dog he bought at Puppy Barn had serious medical issues.
About 70 dogs are now quarantined until at least Tuesday and being treated to protect them from parvo.
They will eventually be adopted through the county's animal shelter, the county has said.
