Sixers rookie Ben Simmons fractures right foot

The Sixers entered the 2016-17 NBA season with significant injury questions, and they weren’t even able to make it out of the four-day training camp without suffering a major blow. It just didn’t happen to the player that you initially might have expected.

Rookie point forward and top overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft Ben Simmons suffered a fracture of the fifth metatarsal bone of his right foot in a scrimmage on Friday afternoon, according to the 76ers. Initially, it was described that Simmons rolled his right ankle. The Daily News’ Bob Cooney was first to break the news.

Here is the Sixers’ official update of Simmons' day:

No timetable has been set on how much time Simmons will miss, but the injury is a major setback for a team that had a renewed sense of optimism coming into the season. Much of that optimism was due to the addition of Simmons.

Simmons was the top pick after averaging 19.2 points, 11.8 rebounds, and 4.8 assists per game in his lone season at LSU. There is much more to come.
