Sixers agree to three-year contract extension with head coach Brett Brown

The Sixers and head coach Brett Brown have reached an agreement on a three-year contract extension that will keep him in Philadelphia through the 2021-22 season, a source confirmed to PhillyVoice on Tuesday evening.

The move was first reported by Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

For those of you who have been paying attention since the season ended, this should come as no surprise. During exit interviews in Philadelphia, GM Bryan Colangelo spoke openly of his desire to get a deal done with the head coach so that he didn't enter next season on the final year of his contract.

"I've spoken with Brett on a couple of occasions this year, just to let him know it's my intention to sit down with him and discuss a contract extension for him," Colangelo told reporters during his end of season interview. "It happens all the time, but I don't think it's the healthiest of situations for coaches to go into a season with one year remaining on their contracts, it impacts so many aspects of what you're doing. I'm hopeful at the appropriate time we sit down and have some discussion with respect to his situation, and he realizes how much we value him as the coach of his program."

The organization went a little bit further than just offering him a bumper extension, however. Having Brown locked in through 2022 represents a significant commitment from the organization, and speaks to the job they feel he has done leading the program forward despite some trying times in the early years of his tenure.

It's also a reflection, in part, of the relationship Brown has with his star pupils. Joel Embiid openly campaigned for his head coach as the Coach of the Year during the season's final months, and the player-coach dynamic in Philadelphia did not go unnoticed.

More to come...
