Police investigate fatal shootings in North Philly, Strawberry Mansion

The victims are 56-year-old and a 35-year-old; the killings are not believe to be connected

Philadelphia police are investigating a late Monday night shooting at a North Philly gas station that left a 35-year-old man dead and an early Tuesday morning shooting in Strawberry Mansion that killed a 56-year-old man.

A 35-year-old man was killed and a 21-year-old man was injured during a shooting late Monday night in North Philadelphia, police said. Two hours later, a 56-year-old man was found fatally shot in Strawberry Mansion in an unrelated incident. 

The first shooting occurred at 11 p.m. Monday at the PNP gas station on Front and Hunting Park streets, 6ABC reported. A group of 15 people were standing in the parking lot when someone from a white car opened fire, police said. The 35-year-old and 21-year-old men were taken to a nearby hospital, where the older man died.

Police said surveillance video captured the shooting.

About two hours later, police responded to a call of a person shot inside a minivan on the 2900 block of Ridge Avenue, FOX29 reported. Officers found the 56-year-old man lying in the backseat of a Honda, having been shot in the head and torso, Chief Inspector Scott Small said. The sliding doors to the minivan were open and there were five shell casings on the floor. He was pronounced dead at 12:52 a.m. Tuesday. 

Police have not identified a suspect in that shooting at this time.

There have been 232 homicides in Philadelphia this year, police data shows. That is a 22% decrease from this time last year. Since the start of 2020, there have been 1,809 homicides in Philly.

As of July 16, there have been 784 non-fatal shootings and 203 fatal shootings in the city, according to statistics from the city controller's office.
