A scholarship has been created to honor a South Philadelphia music teacher who was killed on Feb. 11 in a crash reportedly caused by an alleged drunk driver.
According to 6ABC.com and other reports, Caroline "Carrie" Morgan, 56, was sitting in her parked Fiat on South 13th Street at around 3 p.m. on Saturday when Anthony Russino, 59, who has since been charged with DUI and homicide by vehicle, allegedly crashed into her car and sideswiped several other unoccupied vehicles.
Morgan, a resident of the 2300 block of South 15th Street, died of injuries sustained in the crash.
According to a GoFundMe campaign created to raise money to launch a scholarship for students in her name, Morgan had taught music for more than 30 years, including most recently at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Elementary School, part of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, where she was employed when she died.
Through the scholarship, St. Francis Xavier's faculty will select one student annually with a passion for the arts to receive the funds. The amount has yet to be decided.
According to the school’s website, students from pre-K through eighth grade attend the school.
