Rutgers University plans to spend up to $3 million to protect against another cyber attack after hackers crippled the school's computer networks several times during the last school year, NJ.com reports.
The New Jersey state university in New Brunswick, Middlesex County, has hired three cyber security firms to help protect the school against another attack.
The firms – FishNet Security, Level 3 Communications and Imperva – are testing the university's vast computer network for vulnerabilities and doing other behind-the-scenes work campus officials say they cannot discuss for security reasons.
University officials said the school expects to spend between $2 million and $3 million on cyber security this year. The new expense was a factor in the 2.3 percent raise in tuition and fees for the 2015-2016 school year.
"We were not well protected," Bruce Fehn, Rutgers' senior vice president for administration, told NJ.com. "We feel we are in a better position than we were before."
