The Roots Picnic is in town for the eighth time Saturday at Festival Pier as Phladelphia's homegrown hip hip legends will be joined by fellow headliners Erykah Badu and The Weeknd.
The ascendancy of The Roots into the national spotlight has done nothing to dim Philadelphia's love and appreciation for the critically acclaimed house band of "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon."
Together with late jazz icon Billie Holiday and several other artists, The Roots will be inducted into the Philadelphia Music Walk of Fame on Oct. 26, Billboard reports.
Other 2015 honorees will include Ray Benson of Asleep at the Wheel, disco group the Trammps, rock band Cinderella, Broadway performer Andrea McArdle, and WOGL on-air personality Harvey Holiday.
The induction ceremony will be followed by a celebratory gala at the new Fillmore Philadelphia set to open this fall, said Alan Rubens, board chairman of the Philadelphia Music Alliance. Further details about who will host the gala and who's on the bill that night will be released in the coming months.
