The international film "Hieronymus Bosch: Touched by the Devil" will be screened at the Ritz at the Bourse Cinema, beginning on Aug. 12. There are various showtimes available.
Bosch, a late-medieval artist from the Netherlands, is best known for his illustrations of religious narratives, detailed landscapes and fantastical imagery. His most famous painting is the "The Garden of Earthly Delights."
In the three-panel work, Bosch depicts Adam and Eve, humans taking advantage of paradise and a version of hell.
A close examination of the painting, naked figures take bites from giant strawberries, animal-demons torment, giant musical instruments act as torture devices and more naked figures hide in shells and eggs -- and that's only a fraction of the strange, grotesque and fantastical imagery in the painting.
Earlier in 2016, for the 500th anniversary of his death, Bosch's hometown of Den Bosch created an exhibit of his work. The town had to convince museums across the globe to lend them paintings for the event, which is where the film "Hieronymus Bosch: Touched by the Devil" begins.
In the documentary, a group of Dutch art historians crisscrossed the globe visiting museums to persuade them to lend their precious artworks to the exhibition. Along the way, the art historians get a chance to study his paintings under magnification and infrared photography, revealing the sketches under the paint.
Viewers will receive an unprecedented close-up look at Bosch’s fantastical and utterly unique paintings.
