Report: Sixers in talks to make Mike D'Antoni associate head coach

More additions may be coming to the Sixers' staff in the near future.

According to a report from – who else – Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski, the team's newly appointed chairman Jerry Colangelo is in talks with former NBA head coach Mike D'Antoni about joining the team.

Woj reports that multiple sources say D'Antoni has been talking with Colangelo and head coach Brett Brown, who recently received a two-year contract extension, about coming on as an associate head coach as early as the end of December. More from Woj on Colangelo and D'Antoni's history together:

D'Antoni, 64, and Colangelo have a longstanding relationship that includes successful runs together with the Phoenix Suns and USA Basketball. D'Antoni has been the revolutionary offensive mind of the modern NBA era, clearing the path for faster, smaller offenses that thrive on the 3-point shot.

Woj notes that Brown's extension should quell any idea that D'Antoni is coming in to replace Brown, and that he may be looking to enhance his opportunity to be a head coach again somewhere else by joining the Sixers.

D'Antoni has been a head coach four times before with the Denver Nuggets, Phoenix Suns, New York Knicks and most recently the Los Angeles Lakers.

He resigned from the Lakers following the 2013-2014 season after the team declined to pick up an option for him to coach in 2015-2016.

His most successful years were in Phoenix where he coached the Suns to four seasons of 50-plus wins and took the team to the Western Conference Finals twice.
