Report: PHL ranked sixth most affordable airport

Airport jumps from 48th spot in average flight prices

A recent report says travellers flying out of Philadelphia International Airport have it cheap.

The travel website CheapFlights.com published their 2015 airport affordability report on Wednesday. The annual report takes average prices of popular flights purchased on the site going out of the most-searched airports during a monthlong period.

Topping the list this year was Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International, jumping from the 77th spot in 2014 with an average  flight price of $199. Several large cities joined Cincinnati in the top 10, including Chicago-O’Hare International Airport with an average price of $265 and LaGuardia Airport in New York City with an average of $251. They were ranked fifth and fourth, respectively.

Coming in right behind those two was Philadelphia International Airport. PHL had an average price of $267, ranking sixth on the list. That ranking marks a significant jump from last year's report. In 2014, PHL was ranked 48th with an average flight of $386.

“PHL’s affordability is the result of the hard work of the Airport and our airline partners,” PHL CEO Mark Gale said in a news release. “In the past couple of years, new service and more flights on popular routes by several carriers have spurred competition, which has reduced average fares, and has made PHL even more attractive to the flying public. Affordable fares are a win for everyone.”

PHL is apparently much more affordable than its Pennsylvania counterparts. Lehigh Valley International ranked 73rd with an average price of $437 and Pittsburgh International ranked 80th with an average of $462.

So, if you're booking your flight on CheapFlights.com, now is the perfect time to schedule that long-awaited vacation to Hawaii. But be prepared to empty you wallet on the trip back -- Honolulu International ranked dead last (101st) with an average flight costing $794.
