Washington Wizards forward Markieff Morris, a Philly native and former Prep Charter standout, was reportedly detained at Philadelphia International Airport on Thursday afternoon when one of his checked bags was flagged for containing "a suspicious item."
According to John Gonzalez of CSNPhilly.com, the 26-year-old was traveling with, among others, his mother and upon further review, airport security found that the item in his suitcase was what they believed to be marijuana. Here's more from Gonzo:
A secondary search of his bag revealed what law enforcement officials called “suspected marijuana.” Terminal A at Philadelphia International is overseen by Tinicum Township Police in Delaware County, not by the Philadelphia Police Department. Philadelphia airport security notified Tinicum Township Police. Morris was then taken to the Tinicum Township Police precinct for questioning. He was later released on his own recognizance.
A Tinicum Township police spokesman said the investigation is ongoing. [CSN Philly]
Morris, who starred alongside his twin brother, Marcus, at Kansas before being taken 13th overall in 2011, was traded from Phoenix to Washington in February after spending four and a half seasons with the Suns. He averaged 12.4 points and 5.9 rebounds in 27 games with the Wizards.
Marcus -- taken one pick after Markieff by the Rockets before being dealt -- spent two seasons alongside his brother in Phoenix but now plays for the Pistons. No word yet on if he was traveling with his brother.
