Philadelphia Eagles tight end Albert Okwuegbunam is headed to injured reserve, according to a report from Jeff McLane of the Inquirer.
The Eagles traded for Okwuegbunam on cutdown day a year ago. He appeared in four games for the Eagles and had just one target, which he dropped.
Each team is permitted to designate eight players for return from injured reserve during the regular season, or 10 including postseason play. Using one of those eight allotted designations on Okwuegbunam, if indeed that is what they did, is an odd choice, as an injured, unproductive player isn't likely to garner any interest around the league. The Eagles might have been wiser to release him with an injury settlement and sign him back to the team later.
The Eagles' initial 53-man roster will likely include just two tight ends, Dallas Goedert and Grant Calcaterra. They are nearly certain to add another.
