Pennsylvania State University is in the midst of a growing mumps outbreak with 27 suspected or probable cases as of March 3.
As of the latest count reported by the university's health services on Friday, six of the suspected cases have been confirmed by lab tests. An investigation into the additional suspected cases remains underway.
The University Health Services center issued a notice urging students to avoid drinking games and other “activities that may result in saliva exposure.”
The university also noted that spring break week is underway, which medical experts said might be a good thing for reducing the spread of the virus.
Students are being told to watch for symptoms, which include tender, swollen glands below the ear or along the jawline; headache; fever and other cold-like symptoms.
