A leading pediatric oncologist at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia was appointed by President Obama this week to serve on the National Cancer Advisory Board.

Peter C. Adamson, one of CHOP's top scientists and a professor of Pediatrics and Pharmacology at the University of Pennsylvania's Perelman School of Medicine, will become the only pediatric oncologist to serve on the NCAB, according to a news release from the hospital.

“We are extremely proud of Dr. Adamson on his appointment by President Obama to this distinguished advisory board,” said Joseph St. Geme, MD, physician-in-chief and chair of the Department of Pediatrics. “This recognition is a testament to his dedication and leadership within the medical community in furthering research to advance treatment for childhood cancer.”

Dr. Adamson will act as an advisor to the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, the Director of the National Cancer Institute, and President Obama to represent the pediatric cancer community at the federal level and make recommendations on issues involving the national cancer program and NCI operations.

Since 2010, Dr. Adamson has served as chair of the Children's Oncology Group, the world's largest organization dedicated to childhood and adolescent cancer research. His expertise is in pediatric cancer drug development for early phase clinical trials and clinical pharmacologic studies.

The distinction is particularly noteworthy because the NCAB and the President's Cancer Panel are the only advisory bodies at the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Health and Human Services whose members are appointed by the president.
