According to authorities, the incident occurred around 4:25 a.m. at the victim's home on East Chestnut Hill Avenue.
Police said the 56-year-old victim and a witness were asleep when the suspect, armed with a handgun, entered the bedroom and forced the women to get out of bed. The witness was ordered to remain in the bed as the suspect allegedly sexually assaulted the victim.
At one point, police said the suspect put down his handgun and the victim attempted to pick it up and shoot him. When the gun did not discharge, the victim yelled for the witness to call police and report a rape in progress.
Once the witness notified authorities, the suspect allegedly fled the home in the victim's 2017 Hyundai Elantra. Keys, wallets and a cell phone were also stolen from the residence.
Police described the suspect as a black male between the ages of 18 and 25, about 5'7'' with a dark complexion and a clean-shaven face. He was last seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and black pants.
