Two officers exchanged gunfire with an alleged armed robbery suspect who was later apprehended in Philadelphia, police said Sunday.
The incident began Saturday around 10:20 p.m. on the 2900 block of North Front Street in the Fairhill section of North Philadelphia.
Authorities said two officers, who were in full uniform and in a patrol car, observed a 27-year-old man firing a handgun. The intended target was a 20-year-old man who was fleeing the gunman. One officer exited the vehicle and fired shots at the gunman while the other officer discharged his weapon from the driver's seat. The officers said the suspect returned fire in their direction before fleeing on foot. The suspect ran down Tusculum Street and turned on the 3000 block of North Waterloo Street where officers lost contact with him.
No injuries were reported during the incident.
According to police, the 20-year-old man was able to identify the suspect. Prior to the shooting, the suspect robbed the victim at gunpoint, stealing his wallet and cell phone.
The suspect was eventually stopped by other responding officers, but investigators have not recovered a weapon. No charges have been announced.
Police have not disclosed the identities of the suspect, the victim or the officers due to the ongoing investigation.
Both officers will be placed on administrative duty pending an investigation by Internal Affairs.
The District Attorney's Office will also review the case.
