Authorities are trying to figure out what led an unidentified off-duty Philadelphia police officer to open fire following a reported hit-and-run incident on Tuesday evening in North Philadelphia.
According to 6ABC, the off-duty officer was riding his motorcycle when it was involved in a crash with a Chevrolet Monte Carlo. The Monte Carlo driver then allegedly fled the scene.
At that point, the officer allegedly got up and began firing his weapon at the other car. Investigators told 6ABC that at least one of the bullets sailed through the window of the Temple University Hospital Outpatient Service Center on the 3500 block of North Broad Street in North Philadelphia.
The driver of the Monte Carlo has reportedly turned himself in, according to 6ABC, and a bullet was allegedly found lodged in the car.
The officer was taken to Temple University Hospital for treatment, and it appears he will be fine.
CBSPhilly notes that Commissioner Richard Ross said the officer may have thought the suspect pulled out a weapon, though that hasn’t been confirmed.
