Crews are quickly working to remove a dead humpback whale that washed up on a Sea Isle beach near 20th Street, according to Sea Isle City Police.
The Marine Mammal Stranding Center currently is on the beach removing the animal with heavy equipment, the Press of Atlantic City reported. The whale originally was seen off the coast of Strathmere but then made its way south to its current location, according to the newspaper.
The young, male whale weighs 20 tons and is about 33 feet in length. While no cause of death has been determined, Bob Schoelkopf from the center told the Press that it had no visible injuries and could have died from illness or because its mother had died.
The Marine Mammal Stranding Center and the Sea Isle City Police did not immediately return requests for comment.
