Legendary South Jersey radio broadcaster Seymour "Pinky" Kravitz, also known as “Mr. Atlantic City,” died on Saturday at the age of 88.
In his lifetime, Kravitz made his mark on South Jersey as host of “Pinky’s Corner” on WOND-AM 1400 for nearly 60 years before his retirement in August.
The Press of Atlantic City reports he was the host of "the longest-running daily radio talk show in America" and, in his career, was honored by the New Jersey Broadcasters Association as its first Hall of Fame inductee and first recipient of its Lifetime Achievement Award.
Speaking to the Press on his father's retirement back in August, Kravitz's son, Greg, said, “Generations grew up (with his father) on the radio. Mothers who listened to him became grandmothers; the kids became mothers and had kids. Everyone went to sleep with Pinky.”
According to the Press of Atlantic City, Kravitz's ties to the city were knotted in the 1930s when his family moved there when he just 6.
He was a 1944 graduate of Atlantic City High School and later joined the Merchant Marine. He was also an Atlantic City public school teacher from 1950 to 1978, having started his radio career, first as a side gig, in 1958.
