University City District’s West Philadelphia Skills Initiative (WPSI) and PIDC’s Navy Yard Skills Initiative (NYSI) have launched a collaborative professional development program to train Philadelphia residents for full-time quality-wage careers with employer partner Philly Shipyard Inc., one of the leading shipbuilders in the country.
Philly Shipyard Inc. (formerly Aker Philadelphia Shipyard) is located at the historic Navy Yard and will offer opportunities for graduates to interview for unionized Apprentice positions starting at $17.13/hour. Applications are being accepted for the training program through March 11, with the program running March 28 through April 15. PIDC is hosting two virtual information sessions on Thursday, February 25 and March 9 to provide an overview of the program, recruitment process, and attendees will meet with the employer partner, Philly Shipyard Inc. Registration is now open.
The Shipyard Apprentice Program will be the fourth NYSI program administered by PIDC at the Navy Yard in parnteship with WPSI. This program was custom-designed for Philly Shipyard Inc. to connect participants to the tools and and supports needed to build a meaningful career in the skilled trades. During the three-week program, participants will earn an OSHA-10 – General Industry Safety Certification, Basic Life Support/CPR certification, and gain exposure to the government and commercial shipbuilding industry.
The Apprentice role is a full-time position earning $17.13/hour, and Apprentices will have the opportunity to become full-performance tradespersons with a focus on Welding or Shipbuilding. Apprentices are represented by the Metal Trades Council and received wage increases as they progress through the three-year apprenticeship.
